What is a PC bottleneck?

It is the part of the current workload that reaches its limit first. Every system has one eventually.

A bottleneck is only a problem when it prevents the experience you want. It can change between games, scenes, resolutions and graphics settings.

Think of a frame as teamwork

The CPU prepares game logic and draw work. The GPU renders the image. Memory, storage, cooling and software can also slow the process. The slowest necessary step determines how quickly the next frame can finish.

Signs of a likely GPU limit

  • GPU usage remains near its practical maximum.
  • Lowering resolution or heavy graphics settings raises FPS clearly.
  • Increasing visual quality lowers FPS while CPU behavior changes little.

Signs of a likely CPU or system limit

  • Lowering resolution and graphics barely improves FPS.
  • One or more CPU cores are heavily loaded.
  • Performance drops in crowded or simulation-heavy scenes.
  • Temperatures, memory pressure or background software interrupt performance.

Why fixed bottleneck percentages mislead

There is no single honest percentage for all games. The same PC may be GPU-limited at 4K, CPU-limited at 1080p competitive settings and perfectly adequate for the owner’s target.
