Low FPS, stutter or internet lag?
| What you notice | Likely category |
|---|---|
| The whole image updates slowly | Low frame rate |
| FPS looks reasonable but motion pauses briefly | Frame-time stutter, loading, memory or shader compilation |
| Players teleport, commands arrive late or ping spikes | Network latency or packet loss |
Free checks in the right order
- Reproduce the issue consistently. Use the same location, settings and scene so each change is comparable.
- Close background work. Browser tabs, recording, updates and overlays can consume CPU, memory, storage or GPU resources.
- Check settings. Resolution scale, ray tracing, shadows and high-quality effects can be expensive. Confirm there is no accidental frame cap.
- Update safely. Use the GPU, motherboard or system manufacturer’s official support pages. Prefer a stable driver over random third-party driver tools.
- Watch temperatures and clocks. Performance that falls after warming up can indicate thermal or power limits.
- Check storage and memory. Keep reasonable free SSD space and watch whether RAM is nearly full.
When an upgrade makes sense
If lowering graphics materially raises FPS and the GPU stays heavily loaded, a GPU upgrade is a reasonable next investigation. If graphics changes barely affect FPS, inspect CPU limits. If memory is full or games run from a mechanical drive, RAM or SSD improvements may solve the specific problem for less money.
Avoid one-click “optimizer” claims
Tools promising a universal FPS boost can change settings without explaining the tradeoff. Make one reversible change at a time. Do not disable security features or install drivers from unknown sources for a tiny claimed gain.
