1080p vs 1440p: which should you choose?

1440p is sharper, but it asks the GPU to render substantially more pixels every frame.

Short answer

Choose 1080p when maximum FPS and lower cost matter most. Choose 1440p when you want a clearer 27-inch image and your GPU can still reach your target frame rate.

The pixel difference

ResolutionPixels per frameTypical strength
1920 × 1080About 2.1 millionHigh FPS, lower GPU demand
2560 × 1440About 3.7 millionSharper image and more workspace

Resolution and refresh rate are separate

A 1440p 165Hz screen can refresh up to 165 times per second, but the computer still needs to render those frames. A faster screen remains useful for responsiveness, though its full refresh rate is best used when FPS is high and stable.

Screen size changes what you notice

At the same viewing distance, 1440p usually looks more visibly detailed on a 27-inch panel than 1080p. At smaller sizes the difference may matter less to some users.

Test before replacing the GPU

Use resolution scaling or a demanding game benchmark to estimate the extra GPU load. Upscaling technologies can help, but image quality and support vary by game.
