Do I need a new power supply for my GPU?

The label’s wattage is important, but connector availability, unit quality and age matter too.

Short answer

Use the graphics-card maker’s recommendation as a starting point, then verify the exact connectors and your complete system. Never use a cable that did not come with that specific modular power supply.

Check these four items

  • Capacity: allow sensible headroom above normal combined CPU and GPU load.
  • Connectors: match the exact card’s required plugs and cable arrangement.
  • Quality: model quality matters more than a large number printed on an unknown unit.
  • Condition: age, heat and previous heavy use can reduce confidence in an old unit.

Do not mix modular cables

Power-supply-side pinouts are not universally interchangeable, even when plugs appear to fit. Reusing a modular cable from another unit can damage hardware.

Adapters are not extra capacity

An adapter can change a connector shape but cannot improve the supply, wall-side cable or original wiring. Follow the graphics-card and power-supply manufacturers’ instructions.

When replacement makes sense

Replace the unit when required connectors are missing, the recommendation is not met, the model has uncertain quality, or a high-value upgrade would depend on an old unknown supply.
