Is this CPU compatible with my motherboard?

A matching socket is mandatory. The board must also support the CPU generation and BIOS version.

Short answer

Match the socket first, then verify the processor on the motherboard maker’s CPU support list. That list tells you whether a BIOS update is needed.

Socket comes first

The CPU and motherboard must use the same physical socket. A processor cannot be adapted safely into a different socket. Similar product names do not prove compatibility.

Then check the support list

Motherboards with the same socket can support different processor generations. Find the exact motherboard revision on the manufacturer’s website and open its CPU support list. Match the processor name and note the minimum BIOS version.

A BIOS update can change the answer

If the installed BIOS is older than the required version, the PC may not boot with the new CPU. Some boards can update without a supported processor; others need the old CPU installed during the update.
